This last stripe marked the last stage of the blue belt journey before the next stage of the Gracie Black Belt experience, Purple belt.   Right afterwards, a brown belt, told me that I needed to step it up on everything.  I agreed.  As of right now, I needed to get in a lot more classes..   I had been doing a lot of technique class and less with the practical, sparring and advanced techniques class.  I hope to get in a lot more time with sparring in the next six months.

This week in advance grappling, I learned advanced pinning techniques from the mount.  When I wrestled in high school, the coach always told us to have body on body.  Use your body weight to pin the opponent.  Well, I learned to use my hips more. I also learned my lower back was very weak and not very flexible.  However, I am confident that my lower back can be fixed just like my shoulder injury but it will take time at the yoga studio.  One thing I like about  Jiu jitsu is that it is forcing me to look at my aging body and do something about it.  Another technique was to drive the shoulder, from the mount, into the face of the opponent and pin their face on the mat.  This would make it very difficult for the opponent to move much less bridge to the other side.  I have been forgetting to do this

One thing that I need to practice more is tightening up the neck and chin down to slow down a choke attack. In fact,  if anyone goes near your neck for a choke, tightening of the neck and chin down, should be automatic..  I always try to put the chin to my chest if I know the choke is happening, judo technique from the 70s that I learned, but the neck tightening is new and difficult to do.  I didn’t learn that.  You don’t shrug the shoulders while tightening the neck. .  I haven’t fully mastered the technique.

Perhaps some of you have noticed my weight loss.  Three weeks ago, I went on a super intense fast.   I went without eating for five days. I would drink lemon water with  maple syrup, or coconut water, whenever I got super hungry. In the mornings,  I would do a  salt water flush.  Another thing I did was work out.   I would work out and acted like I had eaten a big meal.  I did lose 10 1/2 pounds.   When the body couldn’t  get energy from food, glucose,  sugar, it would  switch to energy from fat, ketones.  This ketone energy helped mankind survive famine or days without food.  The fat conversion to ketone energy process will happen if you don’t eat after 14 to 16  hours.  The human body can go without eating for 30 days or more.  It will consume the fat before it will consume the muscle.   I wasn’t going to take the diet that far where it would damage muscles.. I don’t recommend this to anyone and it may not be safe.

Sportsmanship. Every opponent should be given the opportunity to tap before breaking an arm, a leg, or a choke out. Jiu Jitsu teaches us control.

In any sporting event, if a person offers a hand, as in hand shake after a match, the right, honorable thing to do, would be to shake hands. That would be very disrespectful not to do it. If you didn’t, that would show the true character of the person.

It is very important to have balance in ourselves. We need to be kind and charitable to counter the violence of Jiu Jitsu.

400 people in attendance, 17 black belt promotions, red belt Pedro Valente Sr, and Royce Gracie in attendance, rock stars of Jiu Jitsu! The Gracie Family and the Valente Family are doing a great job of teaching and promoting Jiu Jitsu. Prosperity, excellent health, and best of luck in 2014!

Also, Wednesday, another Rockstar of Jiu Jitsu, red belt, Relson Gracie was at Valente Brothers.

I am ashamed to admit  and feel very guilty about not attending.  I have three kids and they come first. My son has dyslexia and his therapy was far from the studio. My wife couldn’t drive at the last-minute so I had too. I would have arrived very late to the ceremony. Without a doubt, I could have used the motivation and inspiration.

The classes this week were overflowing with students from other schools. Royce Gracie was black belt testing his students at our dojo.  Pretty cool.  The visiting students fitted right in.

On Monday, December 9, there will be the Winter Belt Ceremony.  Red Belt Pedro Valente Sr will be present along with Royce.

In the fundamentals class,  I seeked out a higher belt for the class.  Normally, during technique review, the practice partner didn’t do any resistance, pure technique. Until that day,  I didn’t see the flaw in this.  Since we both knew the techniques well, the higher belt gave full resistance.  Most of the techniques worked but some didn’t because of sloppy technique.    It was a good reality check.

The Gracie fundamental classes teach street fighting defenses against standing grabs.  There are around nine grab defenses. Going immediately to the floor in a fight, floor grappling, could be the worst place to go in a crowded area, bad floor terrain, or hostile unknown environment. Staying on the feet maybe the best option.photo (15)

This week, we learned the defense against a straight-arm thumb down collar grab.  This was when an aggressive person grabs the collar or shirt, straight-arm, with the thumb facing the floor. I wasn’t clear on the setup, or why.

The defense goes as follows: tightly grab the opponents wrist, the one on the collar, with both thumbs facing down. Step back to drag the opponent off-balance then step back into the persons ribs. While stepping in, the outside elbow slides over the opponents elbow. The opponents palm should be facing the ceiling. The defender should have their elbow touching the front knee in a squat position. The break was holding pressure on the opponents elbow while lifting up the wrist. The attacker’s body will be bent over with arm and shoulder locked up, a very vulnerable position.

Why would anyone grab an opponent with a straight-arm thumb down on the collar? This was an awkward way for an attacker to grab someone.  I would guess this would be a judo gi grab in preparation for a throw.  Without the full move,  the attacker’s arm could be broken just by a quick grab of the wrist with both hands, thumbs facing down, and a strong turn in the thumb direction.

How could the thumb down straight-arm collar attacker prevent their arm from being broken?  I would guess the second-hand would have to grab the defender’s elbow at the same time so as to prevent the defender from turning , or from preventing the defender from grabbing the wrist with two hands.

What throw would a person attempt with the thumb down collar grab?  I don’t have an answer.

Dealing with an angry person; especially, when they are larger than you and yelling, can be intimidating.  Also, to approach the angry person requires courage and readiness to act.  This week, we learned strategies in dealing with these types of people, fundamental lesson 10, pre fight strategy.

In everyday life, the most crazy things can set people off,  ” You parked in my parking space!!!”, ” Why are you looking at my girlfriend???”, ” You cut me off *&(&@!$%!!  Sometime you have to protect someone, your kids, and have to approach the angry person.  The goal of the pre fight would be to position yourself in the most advantageous position for self defense.

Legally, it is important not touch the angry person.  Touching a stranger without justification could put the blame on you if a fight occurs.  Don’t make a fist, this may justify an attack on you.  An angry person’s insults doesn’t give you a right to attack; however, if they use death threats maybe you have a right to defend.   If police show up, a fight could become a court case.  It’s okay to tell the angry person, ” I don’t want to fight.” just to cover yourself in front of others, witnesses.

Does this angry person have a concealed weapon?  This angry person could have a gun or a knife.   The Stand Your Ground, Travyon Verses Zimmerman case  should have been a gun debate.  No gun, no dead Trayvon Martin.

Steps.  Go and talk to the angry person.   Make eye contact.  Stay calm.  Speak clearly what you want.  Don’t use any insults.  Always, the hands are up as if your praying but open and palms facing the opponent.   The distance should be around two feet away.  Be prepared to block the right or left hook. Be prepared to act.

This week, actually,  a week before,  a white belt wanted to review a knife disarming technique during the review part of class.   The owners have been debating adding in weapons disarming techniques into the fundamental classes.  My practice partner was overly enthusiastic to practice the new technique.  Personally, I thought practicing knife disarming technique at white belt level  a bad idea but I went along with it.  I know in order to disarm someone with a weapon, it takes a lot of training. My first reaction to a knife attacker would be to flee.  I think that trying to disarm someone without a good reason is dangerous.

Anyways, I wanted to test him.   I put the pretend knife in my hand and approached with a downward motion.  He weakly grabbed the downward hacking wrist and then did a terrible kimura grip.

On the second attempt, I was going to pretend more like a knife attacker.  With the knife, I came at him.   He weakly grabbed my wrist,  I immediately escaped the grip, and I pretend to stabbed him in the back five times.  Right afterwards, I asked him what he excepted would really happen?  He didn’t answer.  He appeared to realize the reality of the situation, in truth, a mistake could be fatal.
