It has been an interesting week. On Monday, a sports Gracie Jiu Jitsu team from Qatar, practiced with us. The team was in Miami on their way to Orlando for an international tournament. I worked out with a guy named Abdul. He was strong, tall, and had some skills. He said they were exhausted because it took 27 hours to get from Qatar to Miami. Plane delays.  The team was trying to adjust to the time change and practice a bit before the big match in Orlando this weekend.  Abdul said that he was hoping to visit Milwaukee after the tournament because one of his parents was from there and he still has family living in Wisconsin, ironically, so were mine parents.  It is a small world.  After training I wished him and his team good luck.

A few days earlier, I was channel surfing and stopped on a TV channel called Link TV, www.linktv.org.  It was a documentary on Qatar. It is the wealthiest nation in the Middle East. It has a population of 250,000. Qatar is friends to everyone.  The person that runs Qatar, Emir, is Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, whom is a brilliant politician.  Besides making Qatar an amazing place to live, he also created Al Jazeera, the premier Middle East television news program. When I can, I will watch Al Jazeera.  I like it since it gives a very different view of the world of an issue.  I feel U.S. news is filtered. True or not, it is good to get different points of view.

In the year, 2022,  the whole world will  learn about Qatar because it is scheduled to host The World Cup, which is the biggest soccer event held every four years.

It has been six months since I earned Blue belt.  A few days ago was the Summer belt ceromony which I couldn’t attend. I had made the Winter event a life turning point. That night, I made a commitment to my self. Gracie jiu Jitsu isn’t just a gym to workout at. It is the accepting of a new life style, a fitness of mind and body. The winter ceromony felt like an ordination. I let go of an unheathy life to purse a health life, a life that will produce fruit.

Nothing to report. I have a lower back injury that I am taking care of. FYI,  I hate going to the doctor which I try to avoid at all costs.  I am improving.  I am worried if I return too early that I could reinjury myself and start all over again. I should be attending class regardless.  Sometimes its good to take a break.  I don’t like being fanatical about anything, really.

This week, I partnered up with an enormous guy.   When I was in high school, I didn’t have the experience of wrestling with a heavy weight, so this was virgin territory.   I estimated him to be at least 6-3. and possibly 260 lbs or more.  I’m 6-0 ft and 168 lbs.   I could barely put my feet together around his waist when I had him in the guard position.   All he had to do was move around which would cause my legs to immediately open.   That class we practiced the amass pan and the amass pan defense.  The Amass Pan is a kimono choke where the  pinky knuckle and knuckle next to it are pressed deeply into the side of the neck next to adams apple, which painfully cuts off blood flow to the brain. When I was defending against the amass pan, that is when you grab the top of the knuckles and pull back on the opponents choke hand, he put his full body weight on his arm.  It was a lot of weight, a lot of pressure.  If I didn’t bridge and pull back with a lot of effort, he would have choked me out just from his body weight.  It was an enlightening experience to say the least.

From an earlier post you know that I was knife attacked when I was an exchange student in Madrid, Spain.  I escaped with no harm.   Professor Pedro is considering including some weapons defense techniques in the fundamental classes since people are attacked with more than just fists.  It could be a knife, bat, stick, gun, etc.  Today was special, we studied a knife attack defense.  Normally, weapons self-defense is a separate class that you pay extra for. So, if someone tries a stab attack to the heart, my arm should raise to defend automatically.     As a blue belt, we are focused on learning reflex action. For the record, I don’t recommend anyone taking on an opponent with a knife or a gun just because you took a self-defense class,  but if you don’t have a choice,  you should know how to defend  yourself.  This reflex defense could save your life.

On Friday, Valente Brothers Headquarters had a seminar taught by Professor Ryron Gracie, truly a great teacher and the grandson of Master Helio.  Also, I want to give the BBJ view on the Trayvon Martin case.  I will write two separate post on each.

To be honest, I have been off all this week and out of town, Disney World.  I tried to eat healthy on the road which I did; however,  I didn’t see any organic food at Disney World, not one.  Anyways, I kept up with the push ups and situps.  In reality, you don’t need a gym.   Jiu Jitsu training, gracie diet, and push ups / sits ups is all you need to stay fit.    Unfortunately,  I didn’t review the 27 fundamental lessons.   I focused on my family.  Hopefully, I can get back on track this coming week.

When ever you have a choice of rice, always choose brown rice.  Read on.  Have you seen rice in its natural form?  It is a brownish color.  The white rice is white because of processing.   Also, next time you read white rice packaging, look for the labeling that nutrients have been re-added.  This is because the making it white process strips the rice of all its natural nutrients so the food process has to be re-added.   If the rice is left in its natural form, it retains all its great properties. Is frozen food healthier than fresh produce?  I was surprised by the answer.  Unless you have your own vegetable garden or fruit garden, cut, wash, and immediately eat, not necessarily.   It makes sense.   Frozen food is immediately frozen which freezes the nutrients into the vegetable or fruit.  I saw a show the other day, that as soon as a vegetable or a fruit is cut, it starts losing its nutrient value.   How long does fruit and vegetables stay on the shelf at grocery stores?  Anyways, the freezing process halts this decay.  See article below.

As a kid I was always told I have to eat meat.  Who was I to question?  Did you know that some flesh-eating animals, lions, tigers, will not eat cooked meat? They want it raw and bloody.  I have never eaten meat bloody and raw.  To make it short, we aren’t designed to really eat meat as the focus of our diet.  We should eat very little of it and focus on eating fruits, vegetables, and grains for optimal health.

This week, I recovered from a bad flu.   I don’t want to bring sickness to the school.   Even though I had the flu and minor injuries, I am not happy with my mental toughness.  I am mentally weak.   I have been avoiding the sparring class and the throw class.    What is it? Fear of competition? Fear of total committment?  Fear of meeting new people? Fear of losing?   I am embarrassed but it is the truth.

Also, I am playing the belt game.  When am I getting the next stripe?   I got to stop this.   I did that with judo.  It created a lot of anxiety and negativity.  “Oh, I should be promoted, I won such and such tournament.”  The truth is a belt is nothing more than color, cotton, and thread.  The belt is the representation  of your mental knowledge.  So, do I really want to be falsely promote?  No, I don’t.  When the professor’s are ready, they will promote me or give me the stripe that I deserve.  I am in a rush to no where.

Inexpensive, healthy, and tasty, I call it Jiu Jitsu Vegetable Soup.  From start to finish, Jiu Jitsu Soup takes less than twenty minutes to prepare.  In addition to the soups outstanding nutritional value, it has a lot of anti cancer properties; as well as,  aiding in weight loss.

The first step is to peel all the veggies with the side of a knife blade and then chop the carrot, celery stock, green onion, and the sweet potato.  Place all the vegetables in a large pot along with the shiitake mushrooms.  Pour in 2 cups of frozen peas.  * You could substitute another frozen vegetable if you like.  Add the dehydrated seaweed.  Add three cups of water and bring to a boil.  Once the soup is boiling, turn off stove.   Note, I try to minimally cook the vegetables.  Add the miso paste right after the water stops boiling since boiling the miso paste isn’t good for it.   Add tofu for protein.   Let the soup sit for five minutes with the top on.  The miso should look like clouds in the water.  Serve.

You will need:

1 organic carrot

1 organic celery stock

1 organic yam or sweet potato

1 organic green onion

2 cups of frozen organic vegetables,  peas, lima beans, or brocoli.  Your choice.

2 tablespoons of miso paste.   Miso paste can be found at Wholefoods for $5 a tub found in the dairy section.  Cold Mountain.

1 oz organic shiitake mushrooms

1 table-spoon of hydrated sea weed.

1 oz of tofu cubes.

I try to eat this soup everyday.  To keep it from get boring, switch up the frozen vegetables.  You can add garlic or other spices.  My intention was to try to consume five servings of vegetables with this soup everyday.

What is the best defense in a bar brawl ???  That question comes up a lot during Jiu Jitsu practice.  As a Jiu Jitsu student, you adapt to the situation.  Generally,  I know that I don’t want to take it to the ground. Bars are known to have broken glass on the floor.  If your on the ground, someone could throw a chair on you or you could be kicked in a group attack.  In my opinion, the best defense is not being there.

June of 1987 , Greg S., a friend from high school,  and I went to Ocean City, Maryland.  It was a tradition for recent High School graduates from Baltimore and the surrounding  area. Ocean City, Maryland,  is a small run down family vacation town on the Atlantic Ocean with a sandy beach.   Near the O.C. boardwalk, there was a night club with a dance floor, which allowed 18 year olds into the establishment, but were not permitted to drink. We happily paid to get in and had to wear yellow wrist bands.   Meeting women was on our minds.   Note, we had a couple of beers on the beach before we entered.  To be honest, I don’t recall drinking or how much but it definitely wasn’t an unreasonable amount.

As we were entering the bar, I believe we were being watched.  It was about to get very ugly.  The place was dark.    As we were scoping out the dance floor for women,  a ring of guys formed around Greg.  Greg was in the center and another guy facing him.  The guy next to me said, ” Stay out of this and you won’t get hurt.”  Greg is a big guy and he could hold his own so I didn’t immediately object.  Thirty seconds later, the man who told me to stay out of the fight,  sucker punched Greg in the face.   Just as his hand recoiled, I noticed that he was wearing brass knuckles. Brass knuckle is a small metal weapon; worn over the knuckles on the back of the hand.  Greg was stunned and stumbling.   To make things worse, as Greg stumbled, the attacker in front of him struck him.  There was no time to get help.  I didn’t remember seeing a bouncer at the front door.   I had to act.  Right or wrong, I forcefully grabbed the back shoulder shirt of the guy with the brass knuckles and the other guy  on my other side by his shirt shoulder.  I charged forward while dragging the two guys by the shoulder into Greg and the other guy.  In a second, we were all laying on the floor in a pile and I was on top.  My hope in collapsing the ring was to create chaos so that Greg could escape.  This is when the whole situation gets really unclear.  I don’t know what happened to Greg S. after that point.

My next memory is jumping to my feet after the pile up.  When I got to my feet, there was a guy in front of me with his hands up with clinched fists.   I quickly looked around.   I didn’t see Greg.  I jabbed the guy hard in the jaw.  He returned with a hook.   I immediately felt a cut under my eye.  The cut on my face was from the attacker’s jagged ring.  Blood ran down my face.  I don’t have memory of the events after that.  Perhaps there was another attacker, out of view, that choked me out? I believe I was knocked or choked unconscious at this time.

Next memory, I saw K. Hopkins, she graduated with me and Greg,  standing with her boyfriend in front of us.  Her boy friend was manic, wide-eyed, breathing heavy, and holding a broken tennis racket.  It was weird.    Her boy friend said that he thought he saw the attackers leave the bar.  I don’t know if he came to our aid or after I broke the fight ring, the fight evolved into a brawl.    After that, I remember the sun had risen.  A cop was making a report.  We started making our way to the exit.  Someone yelled, ” Let them go, they had nothing to do with this.”

Next memory, I was in Greg’s car.   Greg was in bad shape.  One of his eyes had a broken blood vessel.  He kept repeating the same sentence over and over. He had a concussion. I wanted to go to the emergency room but he insisted on going home, so I drove him home in his car.
